Family Therapy in Therapy

When many people think of those struggling with liquor and drug addictions, they only think of how those addictions are adversely affecting the lovers themselves. Lovers make poor decisions and problems that cause pain and chaos in their lives. Rarely do people consider in the beginning how an addiction might be affecting the household of an addict/alcoholic. And more often than maybe not, a lot of people do not understand how family members and family units may donate to addiction.

It should be noted that the affects can be quite damaging, when it involves alcohol and drug habits affecting the family of an addict/alcoholic. It is possible that verbal and even physical punishment become dilemmas when a habit is present. The household of an addict or alcoholic usually experiences a great quantity of emotional pain because they watch their loved one damage themselves again and again. Trust may be lost, resentments may build, and the relationships in a family can become very rough involving the other family members and addict.

Let’s also maybe not forget that the existence of addiction in one person in a family can result in the development of addiction in other members of the family afterwards. This can be most common with addicted parents setting an example for their young ones to follow.

When drugs or alcohol are a part of family life, young ones learn early on to control their feelings, withdraw from family relationship, act out or as a means to manage their environment self-medicate. Members of the family develop means of coping that are more and more structural, because addiction and alcoholism are modern. Usually the children are left to fend for themselves or accept the part of parenting other children within the family.

Several of the traits that kids develop in a reaction to addiction or alcoholism include:

* Anxiety

* Depression

* Helplessness

* Hypervigilance

* Desire to self-medicate

* High threat behavior

* PTSD

Obviously, approaching your family in rehab is very important. while the addict is in therapy, once rehab is accomplished when it is perhaps not addressed the addict will come back to exactly the same dysfunctional family system. This increases the incidence of relapse and also sets up the household members for failed relationships later on. Family therapy can help identify patterns in the family. Therapy will help family improve communication and trust.
